There's something about walking into the grounds of The Open Championship, especially when it's on home soil in Northern Ireland, that hits differently.
The air smells of history.
The crowds hum with reverence.
And somewhere, behind the swing of every club and the roar of every gallery, is a rhythm, not from a speaker, but from the moment itself.
This summer, I had the chance to walk into The Open again.
Back to the coastline. Back to the crowds.
And back to where the idea for Sideline DJ really began.
The Soundtrack of Sport, in Real Time
As I stood by the tee box, watching world-class athletes step into focus, I couldn't help but imagine the soundtrack playing in their heads.
Because that's the thing about music and sport:
Even when it's not playing out loud, it's always present.
A calming melody to slow the heart rate.
A driving beat to sharpen focus.
A familiar song to ground you in routine.
Golf may be a game of silence and solitude, but it's never without music, at least internally.
Growing up in Northern Ireland, sports were stitched into everyday life, but so was music.
It was in the car before matches.
It was on the pitch before training.
It was in the headphones when we needed to reset or recharge.
And as I moved through life, as an athlete, a teammate, a coach, and eventually an entrepreneur, that connection between music and performance never left me.
Sideline DJ was born from that space.
Not as a tech product, at first.
But as a feeling:
"If this song changes how I show up, what could it do for a whole team?"
⛳ Inspiration at The Open
Watching the world's best step up at Royal Portrush, I realized something simple but profound:
Even the calmest sports are ruled by nerves, rhythm, and mental clarity, the exact things music can shape.
It's easy to overlook the emotional side of performance when we obsess over stats and swing speeds. But confidence? Calm? Focus? That's where outcomes are made, and where music, I believe, plays a vital, untapped role.
That realization, in the hush before a drive, in the thunder of a crowd, lit a fire in me.
Coming Full Circle
Returning to Northern Ireland reminded me that this journey isn't just about tech.
It's about home, roots, and the small moments that shape us.
It's about turning something deeply personal, a pregame playlist, a locker room speaker, a walk across the links, into something powerful enough to help others perform at their best.
